Why this site exists
Borneo is one of only two places on Earth where orangutans live in the wild, and Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo, is where most UK visitors go to see them. Planning it is the hard part: the long flights and the internal ones, river boats to lodges you can only reach by water, which sanctuaries are worth seeing, when the rain comes, and whether the jungle suits you if you are not as nimble as you were.
That information is spread across tour brochures, the Sabah Tourism Board, conservation charities and forums. We bring it together in one place and compare the organised holidays on the facts.
How we compare holidays
We only compare things we can check: what each operator publishes about its own holidays. That means the length, the from price where it is shown, the lodges and hotels, where the flights go from, the meals, the pace and the departure months. We note the date we checked, because prices and departures change.
We don't publish reviews of tour operators or lodges or give star ratings, and we never invent experiences. If a holiday includes a river cruise on the Kinabatangan, we say so because the operator says so, and link you to the operator for the live details.
Where our facts come from
- GOV.UK foreign travel advice for Malaysia, and NaTHNaC and the NHS for health.
- The Sabah Tourism Board, Sabah Parks and the wildlife centres' own sites (Sepilok, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre).
- Conservation organisations such as WWF and the Orangutan Appeal UK for wildlife facts.
- The tour operators' own published holiday details.
- Photos from Wikimedia Commons, credited on each page under their open licences.
How the site makes money
Some links to holiday companies are affiliate links. If you click through and book, the company may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the facts we show.
We are independent. We are not part of, or endorsed by, any tour operator, lodge, wildlife centre or the Sabah authorities.
