What do Borneo tours from the UK include?
Picture your first morning in the rainforest. The air is warm and damp before breakfast is over, a rope strung between the trees starts to sway, and a young orangutan swings down towards the feeding platform at Sepilok. A couple of days later you're in a small boat on the Kinabatangan River at dusk, watching proboscis monkeys settle into the riverside trees while a hornbill flaps across the water.
That's the heart of almost every Borneo wildlife holiday sold in the UK. Most follow the same line through Sabah, the state across the north of Malaysian Borneo. You fly into Kota Kinabalu, hop across to Sandakan, spend a morning at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, watching the feeding, and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre next door, then head upriver to a jungle lodge. Many add Kinabalu National Park, at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, and finish with a few lazy days on the beach.
What changes is the detail. Some fly from your nearest UK airport, and one is land only. Some stay at two river lodges, one skips the river altogether, and a few cross into Sarawak for longhouses and caves. The table further down sets out the differences.
The kinds of Borneo tour you can book
Look for a trip to Borneo online and you'll find everything from a day at Sepilok with a local agency to a private tour planned around your own dates. The UK holidays here fall into four broad types.
Escorted tours with flights
This is the classic format. Travelsphere, Newmarket, Titan and Mercury sell a fixed itinerary with UK flights, hotels, transfers, many of your meals and a tour manager or local guide, all in one booking. Titan adds a shared chauffeur to the airport. On a first long-haul wildlife trip, start here.
Sarawak and Sabah together
Wendy Wu's Best of Borneo begins in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, with Bako National Park, the orangutans at Semenggoh and a longboat trip to an Iban longhouse, then flies to Sabah for Sepilok and the river, with every meal included. Explore adds the caves of Mulu, a longhouse homestay and Tabin Wildlife Reserve, sold land only.
Borneo as part of a bigger trip
Riviera's grand tour pairs Penang and Kuala Lumpur with a short Borneo stay and Singapore. Travelsphere sells its own tour with a Singapore city stay tacked on before you fly home. Malaysia and Borneo holidays covers these multi-centre trips.
Tours for solo travellers
Just You runs Wild Borneo for solo travellers only, with a room of your own guaranteed. Saga has a solo departure of its Wild Borneo route, and its price includes travel insurance. See solo holidays to Borneo for how they compare.
Why The Best of Borneo leads our list
Travelsphere's The Best of Borneo: Orangutans and Rainforests gives you a proper taste of Sabah without rushing it. It opens in Kota Kinabalu with a village walk in the Kiulu Valley, calling at a Dusun house and a rubber-tapping farm, then flies you to Sandakan for the orangutan feeding at Sepilok and the sun bears next door.
Then the road runs out.
A boat carries the group across the Sulu Sea and up through the mangroves to Abai Jungle Lodge, which is built on stilts and reached only by water. You'll cruise at sunset and stay out after dark for the fireflies, set off for Pitas Oxbow Lake at first light, and wander the boardwalk behind the lodge, where wild orangutans are sometimes spotted. A slow boat ride upriver takes you on to Sukau for more cruises.
A stay at Shangri-La Rasa Ria, a beach resort set in its own patch of rainforest, rounds things off after all those early starts. A Travelsphere Holiday Director travels with you, and UK flights from your chosen airport, internal flights, transfers and porterage are included. Travelsphere grades the pace as Active, which it describes as moderate walking and longer days.
Our page on Travelsphere's Best of Borneo has the detail, and orangutan holidays compares the trips purely on the orangutans.
How the other escorted tours compare
Every tour here uses the same handful of places, so what matters is how you get there, where you sleep on the river, who leads and how hard the days are. These facts come from each operator's own page, checked in October 2026.

The big trade-off is mountain or river. Most of the other tours spend time in the rainforest of Kinabalu National Park, below Mount Kinabalu, often with Poring Hot Springs, while Travelsphere skips the park for a second lodge on the Kinabatangan and more time on the water.
Accommodation varies too: Titan's lodge at Sukau is basic, yet its tour also uses five-star hotels, and Newmarket ends with a long beach stay. If comfort comes first, see luxury Borneo holidays. For the companies themselves, rather than the itineraries, Borneo tour operators compared sets out how each one works.
What an escorted tour takes off your hands
Could you plan this yourself? Plenty of people do, but the pieces don't join up easily. Here's what the organised holiday sorts out for you:
It's the jungle lodges that make the difference. Reaching Abai or Sukau on your own means arranging boats and rooms from the far side of the world.
Which Borneo tour suits you?
None of these tours needs you to be an athlete, but none is a sit-by-the-pool holiday either, at least until the beach at the end.
Heat, boats and boardwalks
Sabah is hot and sticky all year, and the rainforest feels hotter still. River days start early, and you'll step down from jetties into small open boats several times a day. Walks are mostly on boardwalks and tracks, but Travelsphere warns some are rough underfoot and its tour isn't suitable for limited mobility. After rain, leeches come out on forest trails. They're harmless but unnerving, so leech socks or tucked-in trousers help.
Pace grades give you a rough guide. Travelsphere, Newmarket, Mercury and Just You call theirs Active. Titan's is Adventurer, Wendy Wu asks for moderate fitness, and Explore's Full On grade, with a longhouse homestay in a shared sleeping area, suits seasoned travellers. If you're unsure, ask the operator how long the walks are.
First long-haul trip, or going alone?
An escorted tour is the gentlest way into Borneo: you're met at the airport, your bags are carried and someone always knows the plan. Solo travellers have two dedicated tours, and you can ask the other operators about single rooms.
What will you see on a Borneo wildlife tour?
Be honest with yourself about the odds, and you won't be disappointed. At the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre your chances of seeing orangutans at a feeding time are very good, but these are semi-wild animals that come and go as they please, and fewer turn up when the forest is full of fruit. Rehabilitation centres aren't zoos, which is the whole point.
On a Kinabatangan River cruise, proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles, kingfishers and hornbills turn up on most cruises. Wild orangutans and the Bornean pygmy elephant are the wildlife everyone hopes for, and neither is ever guaranteed. River level, the fruiting season, the time of day and how sharp-eyed the boatmen are all play a part, which is why more cruises give you more chances. Our guides to where to see orangutans and the Kinabatangan River explain what affects the odds, and Borneo wildlife holidays looks wider than the orangutans.
Watch the right way, too. The Orangutan Appeal UK asks visitors at Sepilok to keep their distance, stay quiet and never touch or feed the orangutans, as they can catch human illnesses. Skip the flash on night walks, keep quiet on the boats and avoid anything offering a photo holding an animal.
Is Borneo safe, and what about health?
The Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the islands and dive sites off eastern Sabah, between Sandakan and Tawau, because of the threat of kidnapping. It says this doesn't apply to the mainland of Sabah, which is where these tours go: Kota Kinabalu, Sepilok, the Kinabatangan and Rasa Ria. Read the live GOV.UK travel advice for Malaysia and check it again before you travel. Our page on whether Borneo is safe explains the warning in plain English.
For health, TravelHealthPro lists the vaccines most travellers to Malaysia need and notes that dengue is a risk in Borneo, spread by mosquitoes that bite mainly by day. It rates the malaria risk as low in inland Sabah and very low on the coast. Book a travel health appointment well before you go.
Choosing your Borneo tour
Start with what you most want to see. For orangutans and the river, pick a tour with nights on the Kinabatangan, ideally at two lodges. For Mount Kinabalu, choose one that stops in the national park. Want Sarawak's longhouses and caves too? Wendy Wu and Explore go there.
Then weigh up the practical side: your departure airport, who leads the group, the meals and how much walking suits you. The escorted Borneo tours in the cards above link straight through to each operator for the latest dates. For a wider look at every route, our Borneo holidays home page lays them all out side by side, and the best time to visit Borneo guide helps you pick your month.
